Door to Door Sales Scam

Police Scotland have circulated information about a door to door scam that is being carried out in the area.
A resident in Bieldside  paid £200 for a set of pans that could be sourced for only £20 online.  The resident was targeted by a gang of smartly dressed young men driving prestige Range Rover and Mercedes cars. in a door-to-door selling scam.
They told the unsuspecting householder that they were from Switzerland and were selling top of the range kitchenware to upmarket hotels.  They said the pans were left over from an exhibition before offering them a deal at a big discount against a full price.
They told the resident that the goods were manufactured by a big kitchenware brand and were professional quality pans. When he got the pans out of the box, he realised he’d been sold bargain basement items at an inflated price.  By this time the seller was long gone.
The resident had not been left any cancellation rights or means to contact the trader.”
Trading Standards and Police Scotland say, that, in law, consumers are entitled to a 14 day cancellation period when they have bought goods and services more than £42 in their own homes. Door-to-door traders are required to provide paperwork including their contact details and a cancellation form.
Consumer protection regulations also make it a trading offence for sellers to mislead consumers in their sales pitch. Making false statements about recommended prices or other supposed discounts, or falsely suggesting goods were manufactured by a trader would also fall foul of the regulations.
Where a consumer has no means of contacting the seller to raise a complaint, it means returning misdescribed goods, cancelling a contract or getting a refund can be practically impossible.
Trading standards officers advise anyone approached by door-to-door sellers to politely say they are not interested and report the matter to trading standards by phoning 03454 04 05 06

Flower Displays - Airyhall Library

At a recent meeting of the Community Council there was a suggestion that we should brighten up the area around the Airyhall Library.  As a result 6 flower containers were acquired and have been filled and placed around the building frontage.

The Community Council would like to thank Mike Chapman and his team at Aberdeen City Council for their promptness in responding to our requests and for the way in which they have planted the variety of plant and colour within the display pots.

If you have a suggestion for enhancing any area within the Community Council area, we would like to hear from you.

You can email us on bandmcommcouncil@gmail.com

Police Report - June 2017

The West End Community Policing Team have issued their performance summary for June 2017. The style of the report has been redesigned to take cognisance of the local policing plan. That plan identifies 4 priorities for the team, namely:
  • Acquisitive Crime (Homes/Cars being broken into);
  • Drug dealing/use;
  • Antisocial Behaviour/Disorder;
  • Road Safety and Road Crime.
Our running total charts have been revamped in recognition.  Any comments please email and let us know.

Acquisitive Crime (Homes/Cars being broken into)
There continues to be a spread of Theft by housebreaking incidents across the area. People are again asked to make sure doors are locked and keys stored securely.
There are also a number of thefts from motor vehicles.  Once again a plea that all vehicles are locked and personal belongings removed from view or, even better, taken inside.
Overall acquisitive crime remains low.

Drug dealing/use
Please continue to let us know about any suspicion of drug dealing or use.  Intelligence we receive will always be actioned.

Antisocial Behaviour/Disorder
Once again, early information on Anti-social behaviour or disorder will assist in nipping incidents in the bud.

Road Safety and Road Crime
No general comment.

Forthcoming Operations:

Operation LATHE

Operation LATHE has been set up to robustly tackle push bike crime and will focus on three strands of intelligence, prevention and enforcement.

The local policing team are based at Whinhill and request that if any suspicious activity is seen they are contacted, either as an emergency on 999 or on the Police Scotland Service Centre at 101.
