Police Report - February 2019

This report aims to highlight emerging issues in the area, and to provide crime prevention advice and guidance to residents in Braeside and Mannofield.  Local CPT's focus is to reduce crime and disorder, help create safer communities and respond effectively to local concerns. This is their update:-

Community Policing Priorities
Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
There has been one report of a vandalism in which a house window was damaged overnight. Whilst our area is a thoroughfare for many it is unusual to have people wandering our streets in the early hours, if you see or hear anything out of the ordinary please let us know.
There have been no reported assaults or disorder during this period.

Acquisitive Crime:
There has been a report of a house breaking during the day in the Deeside area of Mannofield this is most unusual, some personal electrical items were taken. Should you see anyone hanging about who gives you this slightest hint of a suspicion they are up to no good regardless of the time of day please call us.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
In response to your requests Officers will be taking a robust approach balancing education with enforcement to ensure the relatively small minority who are responsible for committing offences and antisocial behaviour with vehicles are held accountable for their actions.  We will be working with partners and making use of antisocial behaviour legislation.

Residents in the areas affected by antisocial driving are encouraged to contact Police on 101 at the time to report incidents in order for us to take positive action.

Community Engagement & Reassurance
At the end of the month the clocks go forward and the lighter nights will be upon us, this is also the time of year in which we see an increase in Doorstep Crime. Be it bogus callers or rogue traders they have a sole aim and that is to take from you. They will look to pray on the elderly and other vulnerable groups in our community.

Bogus callers will visit a property claiming to be from perhaps a utility company or a charity in order to gain access and steal from within.

Rogue traders offer services typically carried out to a poor standard at over inflated prices, and may use violence or threats to get payment or consent to carry out work, sometimes they will just take
the money and do no work whatsoever.

The more vulnerable in our society continue to be the main target for these fraudsters please look out for their elderly or otherwise vulnerable friends, relatives and neighbours but please also spare a thought for yourself. These criminals can be  very plausible and persuasive and it can be easy to be taken in by them. They are often well practiced and very convincing as they try and secure the confidence of victims. Remember this is how they make their living and most are very good at it.

People may be embarrassed to have fallen victim but it is important that this is not a hidden crime in order that we can do something about it. We all have a part to play in shutting out the scammers. When you get that knock at the door, ask yourself why has this young person come all the way from elsewhere in the country to sell me some tea towels or other cleaning products?

When you say it out loud it sounds a little daft, this is not part of some government scheme to rehabilitate offenders or provide an income for less abled people, they just want to take your money for something worth a fraction of what you paid for it.

We have world class trades people in Aberdeen, none of whom drive around the city offering to fix peoples guttering/roofs for free only to discover damage worth £1000s when they get up there but remarkably have the time to do it for a knock down cash price next week.

There are two ways to beat the scammers don’t buy anything from them and let us
know so we can stop them.

Following on from last month, if you see an elderly person in your community having
some unexpected work done be nosey, ask them about it, if you have the slightest
doubt about what’s going on let us or our partners at Trading Standards know about
it.

National Campaigns

As highlighted before, 2019 will see the introduction of the DOMESTIC ABUSE (SCOTLAND) ACT 2018

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/asp/2018/5/contents/enacted.

We recognise that domestic abuse is more than physical assaults, it's about abusers who exert control over their victims by using a range of debilitating tactics. Survivors have long told us that whilst physical assaults are often part of that abuse, it is commonly the punishing psychological abuse which is more difficult to cope with. This new legislation is very welcome as it recognises the full extent of abuse that victims suffer and allows us to bring the full weight of the law against those who
commit abuse, whatever its form. For details of the current campaign
