Police Report May 2021

This report from our Police Scotland Community Policing Team covers progress made in dealing with the priorities for the Braeside & Mannofield Community Council area during May 2021.

COVID 19 – UPDATE
As of Monday 17 May 2021 Aberdeen City moved to Level 2 of the 5 Covid-19 protection levels laid out by the Scottish Government. The Scottish Governments intention is for most of Scotland (not already at Level 1) to move to Level 1 on 7 June and Level 0 on 28 June, but only if the data remains supportive and the restrictions in the levels remain necessary and proportionate.

The below link is what can & cannot be done in Level 2.
https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-protection-levels/pages/protection-level-2/

Remember FACTS to help protect yourselves and others:

Officers continue to respond to reports of any breaches in the regulations using the 4E’s principle, namely Engage, Explain Encourage and Enforce as a last resort. Locally Police received a couple of call where no offences were discovered on investigation.

Community Policing Priorities

Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
On Friday the 7th May we received reports of a group of male’s door step selling across the area. Officers traced those responsible and provided suitable advice before asking them to return to their own area, which they did. This is a timely reminder to be vigilant of those trying to sell items on your doorstep, please report anything suspicious to Police on 101.

Officers continue to proactively patrol area’s known for anti-social behaviour across the area and will deal proportionately with any offences detected or where evidence is sufficient.

Acquisitive Crime:
Between Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th May items including a power washer were stolen from a driveway on Craigton Road, Aberdeen.

Overnight from Monday 18th into Tuesday 19th May, an insecure vehicle was entered and rummaged through on Hammerfield Avenue.

Enquiries are ongoing into both which appear opportunistic and are a timely reminder to ensure you keep your vehicle and belongings secure at all times.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
There have been no incidents of note over the reporting period.  We continue to work with partners in response to specific complaints in terms of road traffic offences. Residents in the areas affected by antisocial driving are encouraged to contact Police on 101 at the time, to report incidents and provide as much description as possible of the vehicle(s)/person(s) in order for us to take positive action.

Community Engagement & Reassurance
Acquisitive Crime and how to help protect your property.

What can I do to stop thieves entering and stealing from my garden?  If you have a garden, it’s the first thing an intruder will have to deal with if they want to break into your house. There are also items in your garden which a thief may wish to steal.  Take some simple steps to secure your garden, shed and garage.
  1. Keep hedges, walls and fences low at the front of your house. Keep this to a maximum of 1.2 metres high. This will make it harder for thieves to go unseen by neighbours or people passing by.
  2. Install locked gates so it's hard to get into the back or sides. Rear fences and walls should be a minimum 1.8 to 2 metres in height. Trellis topping or an intruder deterrent strip can make climbing difficult.
  3. Grow aggressive shrubbery to make it hard for intruders to climb through. Ideal plants include berberis, blue spruce, common holly, giant rhubarb, golden bamboo, firethorn, shrub rose, pencil Christmas tree, juniper and rubus (bramble).
  4. Security lighting around your property can act as a deterrent. Ask whether neighbours would see someone with the light. Careful use of lighting will inform you or neighbours if someone is there.
  5. Avoid floodlighting that can cause problems to neighbouring properties.
  6. Make sure waste / recycling bins aren't in a place which will make them easy to use to step or climb over fences/walls or access windows.
  7. Lock away any garden implements, furniture or tools in a shed, garage or outside store. Items such as ladders can be useful for breaking into your home.
What can I do to protect property in my shed and garage?
  1. Photograph valuable items of garden furniture or tools and keep a record of the make, model, colour and serial numbers.
  2. Use a UV pen or DNA Marking Kit to security mark your tools or furniture with your house number and postcode.
  3. Use a chain to lock garden tools and furniture together, ensure the anchor point is securely fixed to the ground or solid structure.
  4. Fit a good quality hasp and padlock to the door, make sure it is fitted with dome headed or non-returnable screws to prevent tampering.
  5. Sold Secure or Secured By Design products should be considered.
  6. Secure windows and don’t let intruders see inside.
  7. Depending on the type of window, you could consider fitting internal window grills, heavy wire mesh or reinforced glass.
  8. If a window opens, a window lock should be fitted.
  9. If you have an intruder alarm, consider extending it to cover sheds, garages and outbuildings. Ensure that there is a visible external sounder box.
  10. If you do not have a secure shed, don’t leave items lying out bring items inside.
  11. If your garage joins with your home and there is a through door, it should be to the same security standard as your front or back door, and when not being used you should keep it locked.

Little Big Lunch - Funding available

Last year the Community Council were in the process of arranging a community picnic event under the auspices of the Eden Project’s “Big Lunch” initiative.

https://www.edenproject.com/eden-story/our-ethos/the-big-lunch-neighbourhood-get-together.

Thanks to COVID-19 we were not able to progress. The budget we had set for organising the event has been rolled over into this financial year, but with the restrictions on mass gatherings looking as if they will not be lifted any time soon, we have decided to make the “Big Lunch” budget available for Little Big Lunch projects.

Once the restrictions allow, if you and your neighbours want to organise a local or street “Little Big Lunch” where you can meet socially and re-connect with your neighbours then we would be happy to help with a donation to your festivities. Obviously there will be one or two conditions, for example, you must be able to demonstrate that the event is open to the neighbourhood and not just a family bash!

If you are interested then email the secretary who will be able to send you details on what we have available and how to apply.

Police Report - April 2021

This report is from our Community Policing Team and covers progress made in dealing with the Community Council area priorities during April 2021

COVID 19 – UPDATE
As of Monday 26 April 2021 Aberdeen City is in level 3 of the 5 Covid-19 protection levels laid out by the Scottish Government. It is expected that from Monday 17 May 2021 we will move to level 2, followed by level 1 in early June and level 0 in late June, though this is subject to assessment of the data at the time of review and may change. The below link is what can & cannot be done in Level 3.

Officers continue to respond to reports of any breaches in the regulations using the 4E’s principle, namely Engage, Explain Encourage and Enforce as a last resort. Locally Police received a single call where advice was passed.

Community Policing Priorities
Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
As the weather improves and the lockdown restrictions ease we are seeing an increase in people of all ages out enjoying the local area. The vast majority of people continue to act responsibly and in compliance with all the restrictions in place on us all.

Over the past month we have noted a few instances of anti-social behaviour such as the vandalism to some plant pots at Airyhall Library and damage to a car parked on Airyhall Avenue over the weekend of 2nd to 5th April. On Monday 19th April, (early evening) some youths gathered in the grounds of the derelict building at Airyhall House to set a small camp fire. No youths have been traced in relation to same.

Officers continue to proactively patrol area’s known for anti-social behaviour across the area including above and will look to engage with those present in a positive manner, dealing proportionately with any offences where evidence is sufficient. I wish to encourage all parents/guardians to engage with their children, to know where they are and what they are up to as we move into summer period.

Acquisitive Crime:
There have been no incidents of Acquisitive crime reported to Police for the area over the month of April.

That said I do encourage members of the public to remain vigilant and where they see something suspicious, that you are not happy with, please consider reporting this, passing as much detail/description as possible of any persons and vehicles, particularly registration marks. Please be mindful of the advice on the Community Reassurance page around ‘Shut out Scammers’ campaign launched this month.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
There were no specific incidents of note in relation to Road Safety and Road Crime.

We continue to work with partners in response to specific complaints in terms of road traffic offences. Residents in the areas affected by antisocial driving are encouraged to contact Police on 101 at the time, to report incidents and provide as much description as possible of the vehicle(s)/person(s) in order for us to take positive action.
