Firework Safety

With Bonfire Night just over a week away, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, in conjunction with NHS Scotland and Safer Scotland have issued some guidelines to make us all safer -

1. FOLLOW THE FIREWORK CODE

During the bonfire season, most firework injuries treated at emergency departments happen at informal private displays. Over half of those requiring treatment are children.

To keep you and your family safe, read and follow the instructions on the packaging for every firework you use. Check the Firework Code at: www.firescotland.gov.uk

2. KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE

There are two categories of fireworks you can legally buy to use in your garden, CAT F2 and CAT F3.

With CAT F2 fireworks, everyone in your party must stand at least 8 metres away for safety. That’s around 26 feet - or the length of two family cars parked end-to-end!

CAT F3 fireworks have a minimum distance of 25 metres, or about 82 feet. You really need a garden the length of a local swimming pool for CAT F3 fireworks.

The category and required safety distance will be clearly marked on the outside of the box.

3. THINK OF OTHERS

Please think of others if you’re planning on setting off fireworks in your garden, and remember that for some people, fireworks can be particularly distressing and frightening. If your neighbours have pets, they will need to keep them indoors - so let them know well in advance.

*IT IS ILLEGAL TO SET OFF FIREWORKS

BEFORE 6PM AND AFTER 11PM
This extends to Midnight on the 5th November and 1am
on Hogmanay, Chinese New Year and Diwali.

**IT IS ILLEGAL TO BUY OR GIVE FIREWORKS TO ANYONE UNDER THE AGE OF 18
With the exception of F1 fireworks.

Considerate Parking Please

There have been a number of complaints of instances of inconsiderate parking at the Airyhall Library and Community Centre car parks.

The majority of the complaints are about parents taking their children to the Primary School and using the car parks, even when they are full to capacity, abandoning their cars and causing obstrucion and inconvenience to those visiting the Library and/or the Community Centre.

On one ocassion the mobile library could not maneouvere out of the car park due to an inconsiderate parker.

Please, if the car park is full or space is limited, find another place to park, don't just abandon your car and inconvenience others.

NHS Scotland Health Initiative - SHARE

The Scottish Health Research Register and Biobank (SHARE) is looking for volunteers to join their register and assist their research.

Health research is very important to the prevention of illness and the improvement of treatments.  SHARE are keen to involve more people in research and need your help to sign up the SHARE Register.

SHARE is a Register of people who are aged 11, healthy or with health conditions who are prepared to help with research.

When you join the SHARE Register, the SHARE Team may send you information from time to time about research studies that might be of interest to you. This might involve taking part in surveys online, sharing your views on your healthcare or taking part in a study researching a new medication for an illness you may have.

SHARE would also like permission to keep any leftover blood (sample) from tests that you may have during your healthcare (like blood tests at your GP). This sample can be used to help genetic research which looks to understand what causes different illnesses.

How do I sign up?

You can register:

·       Online: www.registerforshare.org

·       Phone: 01382 383 471

·       Email: enquiries@registerforshare.org

·       QR code: Scan the code below

ASDA Winter Warmer Initiatives

Asda has announced a range of new ‘winter warmer’ initiatives to support customers and community groups struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.

1.    They are offering everyone aged 60 and over the chance to enjoy soup, a roll and unlimited tea and coffees for just £1 in any of their in-store Asda cafes.  The offer is open all day and every day throughout November and December. The new initiative will run alongside the current ‘Kids Eat for £1’ offer, which runs until the end of the year and continues to be hugely popular, with more than 557,000 meals served since the launch in late June.
2.    For community groups, ASDA are running a ‘Community Cuppa’ campaign in Asda cafes by creating space for local groups, who may otherwise struggle to meet due to rising energy costs, to come together. Spaces will be available on weekdays in November and December from 2pm to 6pm, and all community group members who visit will receive unlimited free tea or coffee. For stores without a cafĂ©, community groups will be invited to use ASDA's large meeting room spaces instead.

3. ASDA's cost-of-living grant programme, led by their charity the Asda Foundation, is providing funding worth £500k to support community groups that are struggling with rising operating costs or increased demand for their services in the current climate.  Individual grants worth up to a maximum of £2,000 are available and priority will be given to groups and charities that need financial help to cover increased energy costs or who want to use their facilities to create ‘warm banks’ – spaces where people can keep warm this winter if they can’t afford always to heat their homes. Groups seeking to apply should contact the Community Champion at their local Asda store, details of which can be found here: https://storelocator.asda.com/

Police Report - September 2022

Our local policing unit Sergeant, John McOuat, has moved on to pastures new within Police Scotland, and we wish him well in his new posting.  He is being replaced by Sergeant Ricky Burr, who we welcome to the area.  We look forward to catching up with Rikky at the next meeting, and warn him that he has big shoes to fill in following John.

This police report covers progress made in dealing with area priorities during September 2022.

This report aims to highlight emerging issues the area, and to provide crime prevention advice and guidance.

"Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
Disappointingly we have had a few calls in relation to anti-social behaviour and vandalism in the area. Officers are and will continue to patrol these areas, dealing proportionately with any persons acting in an anti-social manner. As always we rely on the public contacting us to provide information and if you know who is responsible please let us know.

Of note this month overnight between Friday 9th and Saturday 10th September the padlock securing the Craigton Road Allotments was removed and access gained.  No persons have been identified as responsible and nothing else has been damaged or stolen.

On the morning of Thursday 15 th September officers were called to an ongoing and loud party at an address on Thorngrove Avenue. The occupants were warned and no other calls were received.

A group of around 10 young persons described as all wearing black, aged 14-16 with some on pedal cycles are believed responsible for throwing eggs at a property in the Morningside area around 9pm on Sunday 25 th September. This group are believed to have also been responsible for similar antics at properties in the neighbouring ward (Seafield and Craigiebuckler) over the previous weekend. Patrols have been increased and will continue in the area. Anyone with information as to who is responsible is asked to contact Police on 101 or email the Community Policing Team CPT at AiryhallBroomhillGarthdeeCPT@Scotland.police.uk

Acquisitive Crime:

In the small hours of Sunday 24th August, officers responded to reports of a male acting suspiciously in the Rubislaw Den South area. The male was subsequently traced and it was established responsible for a couple of housebreakings in the Thorngrove Avenue and Morningside area’s where by high performance motor vehicles had been stolen. The male has been arrested, charged and reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

This continues to highlight the importance of being vigilant and reporting suspicious activity as soon as possible. We are grateful to the members of the public who assisted us with the enquiry.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
There have been no specific incidents of note. Officers continue to carry out speed checks with enforcement action across the Community Council Ward, most notably on Craigton Road as and when resources permit.

We continue to work with partners in response to specific complaints in terms of road traffic offences. Residents in the areas affected by antisocial driving are encouraged to contact Police on 101 at the time, to report incidents and provide as much description as possible of the vehicle(s)/person(s) in order for us to take positive action.

Community Engagement & Reassurance
I wanted to pick up on last month in relation to frauds and scams which is an ever increasing issue in all our lives.

Phishing
; is when criminals use scam emails, text messages or phone calls to trick their victims. The aim is often to make you visit a website, which may download a virus onto your computer, or steal bank details or other personal information.

The following link (Government website) explains how to report phishing attempts, and how to protect yourself from scammers.

Phishing: Spot and report scam emails, texts, websites and... - NCSC.GOV.UK

Please take the time to look and read the information contained in the above link as more and more criminals from all over the world are using this to scam us out of our hard earned money.
