Police Report - November 2023

The November Police report from Sgt Burr has arrived and contains the following onformation:

"Our focus is to reduce crime and disorder, help create safer communities and respond effectively to local concerns.

Community Policing Priorities
Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
On the 1st of November, Police received a report of 2 suspicious males in Seafield Crescent. Officers attended and traced the 2 males a short distance away. It transpired that there was no criminality, and they were there for a legitimate purpose, however better to get them checked out at the time, rather than not reporting it and thereafter having to deal with any crime that may have been committed.

On the 11th of November Police received reports of a male being attacked within an address on Thorngrove Court, several Police Units immediately attended and identified the address the disturbance was coming from. On gaining entry the sole resident was spoken to and circumstances established, Police established that no crime had occurred and were able to provide the male with appropriate support until the relevant agencies were contacted

Acquisitive Crime:
Boots on Great Western Road reported a theft on the 28th of October. The male, described as 6 feet in height and wearing striped black hat and black jacket, entered the store and placed a number of cosmetics within his jacket. He was challenged by the security who remotely monitor the CCTV system and announced the theft over the built in speaker system. This cause the male to leave.

On the 3rd of Nov, a resident from Morningside Grove, reported that during the past 24 hours she had received several text messages claiming to be from her son, that he had lost his mobile, so was using a different number and that he needed some money. The caller thought this unusual and didn’t transfer any money. This is a common scam with the sort code provided relating to a foreign bank.

Also on the 3rd, Airyhall Primary School reported the theft of the Defib unit from outside the school. The devise was donated to the school by a local family and is now the responsibility of the council. They have no record of the case being opened, and Scottish Ambulance Service have not issued the code to anyone. There is no damage to the case and the time that the device has gone missing is also unknown as it has to be physically opened to check the device. Enquiries are ongoing as, whilst the devises are expensive, they have very limited resale value and without the charging point in the case will be flat within a short period of time.

A resident of Craigton Avenue reported that she had found damage to her garage roof on 5 November.  The resident advised that around 2am the previous night she heard a large bang, but didn’t investigate it, the following days she had a look and found marks which would appear to have been someone climbing onto the garage roof in an attempt to access the rear garden area, however appear to have put their
foot through the roof as they were doing this.

On the morning of the 12 November a resident from Morningside Avenue advised that her garage had been searched through and 2 bottles of champagne had been stolen from the fridge. The resident advised that the garage door had been insecure and they did not have any CCTV or security system. Officers attended, as did the forensic team for an examination.

The same night there were 2 cars opened and searched but nothing removed, these happened in Duthie Terrace and Morningside Avenue.

I would however like to highlight that the CID Proactive unit have charged and reported 2 males for 19 offences of theft, theft by Housebreaking or theft from motor vehicles, from across the Westend and Hazlehead earlier this week. I would urge the residents to take the extra minute to make sure they secure the doors to their cars and houses.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
On the 2nd of November, Anderson Drive close to the junction with Great Western Road, was partially blocked by a 2 vehicle collision. Given the heavy flow of traffic, Road Policing Units attended, thankfully none of the occupants of the vehicles were injured, however the road remained partially closed until the vehicles were uplifted.

Community Engagement & Reassurance
As you may see above there have been a rise in sneak in thefts from properties. These are predominantly where residents have left house doors or car door insecure. These types of crimes rise in the darker months, and are opportunistic in nature, I would urge residents to take the extra minute to  check their cars and door are locked and secured during the hours of darkness and not give thief the opportunity.

Contact Us
I’m sure you are all aware that at present the Westend and Hazlehead Policing Team have a number of different email addresses that the community can contact us on directly dependant on the electoral ward area, and this is replicated across the whole South Aberdeen which has resulted in 14 separate emails to the various area Policing Teams. To simplify the contact these have all been merged into AberdeenSouthCPT@scotland.police.uk

Emails to this address will still be dealt with by the Officers of the local policing teams, however it will hopefully make it easier for residents to get to the right area in the first instance.

A Step Back in Time

Alison Mitchell, a regular visitor to the Community Council meetings, unearthed some copies of Braeside and Mannofield Community Council Newsletters from the 80's.  The internet was in it's infancy back then and the Community Council of the time didn't have a website like today. So they circulated an annual Newsletter to keep residents up to speed with the issues of the day.

Alison's father was an active member of the Community Council throughout the 80's and was keen on the history of the area.  He shared some of the local stories in the Newsletter, making him one of the main contributors.

His articles included "Braeside Now and Then", The Coortin' Kirk - Ruthrieston West" , "Mannofield Today and Yesterday", Whisky Galore - the Strathmore Distillery" and "Roads to the Past"

You can read the Newsletters and Mr Mitchell's articles by clicking on the various links below.

Thank you Alison for this really interesting step back in time.  The spooky thing is that a lot of the issues that our predecessors were tackling back then, appear on our Agenda today.

If anyone finds newsletters from the missing years and can either scan them or lend them to us for scanning, we would love to publish them here for everyone to see

Click on the various issue to download a copy of the relevant Newsletter

Police Report - October 2023

This month's Police report highlight emerging issues in our area.

Community Policing Priorities
Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:

At the end of September there were several reports of residents at Thorngrove Court having youths knocking on their window and running away. Officers attended on several occasions but no youths were traced.

There have been a number of calls for police regarding anti-social behaviour in the Craigielea Mews area, after a number of visits, officers have established that it is a neighbourhood dispute between several residents. The incidents are confined and there is little impact to the wider community

Acquisitive Crime:
On the 1st of October, Tesco reported an aggressive shoplifter, when challenged by staff, the female became aggressive and abusive towards staff and ran off with a quantity of alcohol. Due to her distinctive appearance purple hair she was traced by officers a short distance away and arrested.

On the 5th of October, Co-op on Great Western Road was targeted by a male who ran in and grabbed a number of food items before running out the store. The staff did not challenge the male and passed a description. Unfortunately he was not traced and CCTV of the incident didn't identify the male.
A resident of Airyhall Drive advised that overnight of the 8th October, items were stolen from her vehicle which was parked in her drive. The resident admitted that she had not locked the car. The items that were stolen were a pair of high end sunglasses and some coins. This was obviously an opportunistic theft, but highlights the need to make sure that residents lock and secure their property, as this type of incidents increase in the darker winter months.

Co-op on Countesswells road reported a male and female entered their store on the 11th of October and stole items worth £175 before walking out, making no attempt to pay. The female is described as white, slightly chubby, wearing all grey clothes. The male was simply described as 6 feet tall carrying an Aldi bag. Officers made an initial search of the area before attending and noting statements. The CCTV has been circulated to officers to obtain an identification, but as yet it remains open and undetected.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
Whilst there has been no reports regarding Road Safety matters this month, Hazlehead and Westend CPT have been working with Roads Policing Units to target the anti-social drivers who have been driving around the Bridge of Dee area and congregating at Asda. As a result of a 3 night operation 10 drivers were issued with ASBO notices, 19 Conditional Offers were issued for motoring offences and 3 drivers were reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

Community Engagement & Reassurance
Police were requested to assist the SSPCA at an address in Viewfield Court on the 11th of October, after they had obtained a warrant to gain entry to a property to seize an abandoned cat within an address. Officers attended and assisted with gaining entry and thankfully the cat was rescued and is now doing well in the care of the SSPCA

Storm Babet - SEPA Advice

With the expectation of the arrival of Storm Babet, The Scottish Environment Agency has issued the following information.

Storm Babet is forecast to bring unprecedented levels of rain to the north-east of Scotland, with flooding that will cause significant disruption and be a danger to life.

Potential Flooding – North East Scotland

Please find below details of SEPA’s regional Food Alerts. Also below is advice on how the public can Be Prepared; Stay Safe; Stay Informed and a useful graphic. Whilst the North East may be particularly impacted, the advice and guidance below is relevant to anyone considering travel, especially in the North East. Can I ask you please to share our advice and graphic on your social media?

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) have issued regional Flood Alerts ahead of expected flooding from tomorrow, which may last until the weekend. Staff are working round the clock to ensure that partners and responder agencies have the latest information.

Rain is expected to move into the south of the country through the early hours of tomorrow morning, and travel up to the North East by around 6am. The heaviest and most prolonged rainfall is expected over Aberdeen City, Dundee & Angus, Aberdeenshire and Caithness & Sutherland, where unprecedented levels are forecast.

Other parts of Scotland are also at risk of flooding as rivers respond and drainage systems become overwhelmed. The risk of river flooding is exacerbated by the fact that many catchments are already saturated following recent heavy rainfall events. The rain will be also exacerbated by prolonged, strong winds from an unusual direction.

Pascal Lardet, SEPA Flood Duty Manager, said in a SEPA press release at midday today, 18 October:

“Scotland has already experienced a significant flood event this month, which communities are still recovering from, and some of the rainfall totals forecast for this week are higher than experienced over that weekend – albeit in some different areas.

“We’re expecting extensive river and surface water flooding in affected areas, with widespread impacts to transport and infrastructure. There is a risk of more significant community scale property flooding – and there will be danger to life.

“Regional Flood Alerts have already been issued, and localised Flood Warnings will be issued over the next few days as rivers respond. However, it is important to note that not all areas that could be affected have Flood Warning schemes, so please do take a Flood Alert in your area as advance notice that you could be affected.

“Take action now to protect yourself and your property. Hazards can be hidden, so please don’t walk or drive into flood water. Remember that not only is flood water likely to be dirty, 30 cm of fast flowing water can move an average family sized car, and just 15 cm of fast flowing water could be enough to knock you off your feet.”

SEPA continue to work with the Met Office to monitor the situation 24/7. People can check our Flood Updates for all the latest information and the three-day Scottish Flood Forecast to see what conditions are expected further ahead.

  • Be prepared Check the Scottish Flood Forecast (sepa.org.uk/scottishfloodforecast) - developed in partnership with the Met Office it provides the earliest indication possible of when and where flooding is expected over the next three days, and whether the source is from rivers, surface water or the sea.
  • Sign up to Floodline and receive free flood messages letting you know when the area where you live, work or travel through is at risk of flooding.
  • Create a flood plan which includes knowing how to shut off your gas, water and electricity supplies.
  • Consider installing flood protection at your home.
  • Stay safe Don’t walk through flood water – 15cm of fast flowing water could be enough to knock you off your feet and hazards can be hidden under the water.
  • Drive with care, and do not travel through deep fast flowing water. It only takes 30cm of fast flowing water to move an average family sized car.
  • If you’re walking beside rivers be extra careful of wet footpaths and small watercourses.
  • Consider deploying flooding protection products if required.
Stay informed  Follow @SEPAFlood on X for the latest flooding information

Ready Scotland shares advice on preparing for severe weather.

What’s the difference between a Flood Alert and a Flood Warning?
We use forecast weather information provided by the Met Office combined with our own observation of rainfall and river levels and advanced hydrological modelling to provide advance warning of flooding.
Regional Flood Alerts are early advice that flooding is possible across a wider geographical area. The purpose of the Alerts is to make people aware of the risk of flooding and be prepared. We normally issue them 12 to 24 hours in advance of the possibility of flooding.
Flood Warnings are more locally specific and are issued for areas where we have gauges on rivers to measure the exact river height. They are issued at shorter notice when we are more certain that a specific area will be affected.

Police Report - September 2023

Our Local Policing Unit have issued the following September report for our area:

"This report covers progress we have made in dealing with your priorities for the Braeside & Mannofield Community Council since the last community council meeting.

The report aims to highlight emerging issues in your area, and to provide crime prevention advice and guidance to Community Council members and residents you represent. Our focus is to reduce crime and disorder, help create safer communities and respond effectively to local concerns.

Community Policing Priorities
Antisocial Behaviour, Violence and Disorder:

A resident of Duthie Terrace called police in the early hours of 28th August regarding someone repeatedly ringing her doorbell. Officers attended and couldn’t trace anyone in the area. The property was checked and there was nothing found to be untoward.

On the 2nd of September, there were repeated reports of a group of people on Craigielea Avenue causing a disturbance. Officers attended and traced the group who were under the influence of alcohol and were conveyed out the area to prevent any further issues.

Staff at the Co-op on Great Western Road called Police on the 4th of September regarding abusive females within the store. On attendance it transpired that staff had tried to intervene in a dispute between 2 groups of females, at which point they became the focus of the aggression. Officers attended and noted details, several of the females were identified and given warnings.

Police were called to the Marcliffe at Pitfodels on the evening of the 6th of September regarding a male who had been assaulted. On arrival officers established that the victim and accused were brothers and the assault had occurred after they had been at a family function. The accused was quickly traced and charged.

Acquisitive Crime:
Whilst slightly outwith your area, on the 29th of August a report was received from a resident of Braemar Place, who is working abroad. He reported that friends had attended to check on his house that entry had been gained by smashing the large rear patio doors. There is a large timeframe for when the incident could have occurred and it is still ongoing enquiry as the owner is still abroad

On the same day there was a report of two televisions stolen from a summerhouse on Morningside Avenue, where the lock had been removed by using tools that were in the garden. There were no other incidents in the street and as such it appears to have been an opportunistic theft.

I would highlight this incident just as a reminder to be vigilant especially coming into darker nights of Autumn.

An elderly resident of Seafield Road employed door to door workers to clean her patio, whilst there they convinced the resident that her house had subsidence and as a result she felt pressured into paying them £4500 via bank transfer. Despite the company having an Aberdeen name, the bank transactions refer to a company in Cambridgeshire, as such Police are working with Trading Standards to follow up on this and treating it as a fraud.

Again I would urge residents not to use workmen who attend at your door unsolicited.

Road Safety & Road Crime:

On the 24th August officers attended a two vehicle collision at the junction of Cromwell Road and Anderson Drive. An ambulance was also initially called to assist but thankfully they weren’t required after circumstances were established. Both drivers were checked and provided negative breath tests.

The driver of an SGN transit van crashed into a tree at the roadside on Anderson Drive at its roundabout junction with Broomhill Road on the 14th of September. The van partially blocked one lane which required officers to attend for traffic management and to assist with the recovery.

Community Engagement & Reassurance
Westend and Hazlehead CPT continue to tackle drugs when we have suitable intelligence for a Drug Search Warrant, this month we carried out Drug Search warrants in both Thorngrove Avenue and Nellfield Place.

Police Report - August 2023

Our Local Policing Unit have issued the following August report for our area:

"This report covers progress we have made in dealing with your priorities for the Braeside & Mannofield Community Council since the last community council meeting.

The report aims to highlight emerging issues in your area, and to provide crime prevention advice and guidance to Community Council members and residents you represent. Our focus is to reduce crime and disorder, help create safer communities and respond effectively to local concerns.

Community Policing Priorities
Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
Enquiries are ongoing in relation to vandalism to a vehicle at Viewfield Avenue reported on 4th August.

On 4th August, a vandalism to a window at a property on Thorngrove Avenue was reported, for which enquiries are ongoing to identify the suspect.

On 12th August, two persons caused damage to the front entrance door of Tesco, Great Western Road. CCTV has been obtained and one suspect identified, with efforts ongoing to trace them and identify the second person responsible.

Acquisitive Crime:

During this month, a resident was subject to a sextortion, paying a quantity of money following a threat that intimate images of them would be distributed should the money not be paid. This type of incident is becoming more frequent and I would encourage residents within the area to be mindful with what they post on both social media, or what they send to private individuals.

A resident in the area reported being the victim of a high value online fraud this month, which is being dealt with by the Divisional Cyber Enabled Crime Team.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
On 11th August, officers on mobile patrol at Springfield Road stopped a vehicle which had no insurance, being driven in a dangerous manner, with the driver also having no licence. The driver was charged and arrested for road traffic offences, and a separate matter, and the vehicle seized.

Community Policing and Roads Policing officers attended a road traffic collision at Countesswells Road on 13th August, involving a car and a young cyclist, thankfully with no serious injuries.

Officers have carried out speed gun checks in the area, including Airyhall Road, with officers engaging with drivers but no offences detected.

Community Engagement & Reassurance
As always, there were other calls dealt with by Police in the area, including neighbour disputes, concern calls, and other calls from members of the public requiring assistance but with no criminality.
