Police Report - August 2024

The following has been received from our Local Policing Unit regarding activities in the Braeside and Mannofield area this month:

Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
In July there was a report of cars parking up in Viewfield Road, the resident believed that the persons within were smoking Drugs. Officers attended and no vehicles were traced, and regular patrols have been carried out to discourage any further incidents.

Acquisitive Crime:
At the end of July, a report came in regarding an attempted Housebreaking at Cranford Road. The resident noticed on her doorbell camera, what she believed to be a youth trying the doorhandle in the early hours of the morning. The footage did not capture any images of the face and as such the resident didn’t want Police to attend, the same night there was an insecure car entered into on Craigton Road, a purse with Credit cards was taken, however the cards were cancelled before they could be used.

At the start of August, a resident of Countesswells Crescent received notification that there were suspicious transactions on her Amex credit card. On checking there were several transactions with Wizzair for flights. The resident contacted the card provider who cancelled the transactions and are carrying out their own internal investigation. This highlights the importance of regular checks on credit and debit card accounts and not waiting till the end of the month.
On the 6th of August, Staff at the Coop on Great Western Road reported a male for shoplifting, who they know to be previous incidents. Officers attended and identified the male, attempts to trace him were unsuccessful and a report was submitted to the Procurator Fiscal for an Apprehension Warrant to be issued.

On the night of the 7th of August there were reports of insecure vehicles being entered and reports of a suspicious male on Morningside Crescent and Deeside Gardens, unfortunately these were all reported retrospectively in the morning, when residents were checking their doorbell activations.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
On the 1st of August, Police attended a collision between a car and a cyclist. Thankfully the cyclist was uninjured. The driver was shaken by the incident but was not charged with any offences.
On the 19th of July Police attended at Craigton Road after a report of a 2 car collision, with 1 passenger trapped. On arrival Police arrival, it was quickly established that the circumstances were not as serious as initially reported. Officers stayed to assist with traffic management.

Stand Up to Falls - volunteer opportunity

Stand Up To Falls is a collaboration between Volunteer Falls Ambassadors, Sport Aberdeen, ACHSCP and NHS Grampian. The team offer falls awareness across Aberdeen, through a popup stand with information, top tips, advice and signposting. Their falls awareness stand visits places like Aberdeen City Vaccination Centre, supermarkets and garden centres where there can be brief conversations with people to raise awareness of the things they can do to prevent a fall and to encourage them to think about a simple plan so they know what to do if they did have a fall.

Falls Ambassadors don’t need any specialist knowledge, they’re looking for people who;
  • Enjoy meeting new people
  • Have a positive and empathetic attitude
  • Are happy speaking to others and sharing information
  • Are available 4-6 times per year to volunteer
There is a drop-in session on Monday 9th September, 1-3pm at Get active @ Westburn and anyone interested is welcome to join the team for coffee, cake and a chat to find out more.

Community Council Elections

Residents in Aberdeen are being invited to stand and represent their communities in forthcoming Community Council elections.

The city-wide elections which take place every three years will this year be held on 3 October.

Community Councils act as a voice for their local area and express the views of local people on issues that are most important to them. They are also a statutory consultee on all planning applications and liquor licensing applications.

Anyone considering standing for election need not have any special skills or experience but should have a keen interest in their local community and be public spirited.  Candidates must be at least 16 years old and named on the current electoral register for the Community Council area in which they reside.

Information sessions for potential candidates will be held cross the city during August and early September.  The first information session will be held on Wednesday 7 August at 6pm at the Town House, Aberdeen.

The closing date for nominations is Thursday 5 September at 4pm with the notice of poll or uncontested election being on 16 September.  Polling day, if required, runs between 8am and 8pm on 3 October.

Councillor Miranda Radley, Communities, Housing and Public Protection Convener, said: “Community Councils have a huge role to play in shaping the future of Aberdeen. Community Councillors represent and help to improve our communities, influence the Council’s Local Outcomes Improvement Plan (LOIP) and ensure that local participatory democracy is at the forefront of positive change.

“Getting involved in your local Community Council is a great way to make a difference in your local area. If you are keen to make a positive impact in your local community, I would strongly encourage you to get involved.”

Community Councils usually meet once a month, to discuss concerns in their local area and through public engagement should encourage feedback and involvement from everyone in the local community. This could include consultations, public meetings and actively promoting the work of the Community Council.

Established under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973, most Community Councils comprise of up to 12 members with some having more, depending on the size of the population for that location, with each community councillor elected to serve for a period of three years.

Anyone interested in standing as a Community Councillor and who would like to know more about the information sessions should contact Karen Finch, Community Council Liaison Officer, Aberdeen City Council, via email communitycouncils@aberdeencity.gov.uk or telephone 01224 053945.
