BESS - Opportunity to send objections closes 10 January

The opportunity to submit objections to the development of a grid battery energy storage system (BESS) facility, and associated development on Land At Newton Of Pitfodels Aberdeen AB15 7AL – opposite Ben Reids in Countesswells Road closes on 10 January 2025
Braeside and Mannofield Community Council and our neighbouring Community Councils have serious concerns regarding the siting of a BESS at this location and are working together to object to the appeal.
To date over 200 people have signed the petition and sent a letter of objection to the Scottish Government.
We still need your help. The more objections that are made, the more likely it will be that this development does not get the go ahead.

URGENT - Countesswells Road BESS application appealed

URGENT     URGENT     URGENT     URGENT     URGENT

On 19 September 2024, Aberdeen City Council rejected an application to install a grid battery energy storage system (BESS) facility, and associated development on Land At Newton Of Pitfodels Aberdeen AB15 7AL – opposite Ben Reids in Countesswells Road

The developers, Flexion Energy UK Storage, 27 Old Gloucester Street London WC1N 3AX, have now appealed that decision.

The surrounding Community Councils have serious concerns regarding the siting of a BESS at this location and are working together to object to the appeal on the following grounds.

The development;
  • Destroys valuable green belt land negating any perceived environmental benefit
  • Does not comply with Scottish Government policy (NPF4) or Aberdeen Local Development Plan (ALDP)
  • Undermines the Green Space Network
  • Is on an unsuitable site due to flooding
  • Relatively new technology with significant incidents – inappropriately close to residential homes, playing fields and schools
  • Requires a full HSE risk assessment before a planning application is approved
For more information and to sign a petition against the appeal and/or download a letter of objection please click here

Aberdeen Citizens Advice Bureau - volunteers

How do you fancy taking on the role as a volunteer adviser or administrator within Aberdeen Citizens Advice Bureau? Or what about volunteering to be involved in advising social policy, fundraising, IT, communications, social media, and beyond? Can you contribute to the work as a member of the Board?

The Aberdeen Citizens Advice Bureau are always looking for volunteers to help.

The Bureau is an independent charity which was founded in 1939, for the benefit of the citizens of Aberdeen, to provide advice and assistance to anyone in need.

The charity is manned by volunteers advisors and overseen by a board of volunteer directors.  The board in turn are scrutinised by the Members of the charity.

All training is given for these wonderfully fulfilling roles and the time commitment is very flexible.

The volunteer numbers at the Bureau fell during and after COVID and the Bureau are very keen to recruit a new cadre of volunteers.  Without volunteers the Bureau cannot function and there will be no help for those in the need in the City.

If you have any spare time, and fancy a new challenge then contact the Bureau for further information. You can visit the volunteering page of their website by clicking here

If you have any questions, call the Bureau on +44 (0)1224 569750 between  and , or email them by clicking here

Police Report - November 2024

The following report has been received from our local Police Unit.  Members of the Community Council believe that the information contained in this new format of report is wholly inadequate in the level of detail and have responded to request for views. Feel free to leave a comment and let us know what you think.

"This report covers progress we have made in dealing with your priorities for the Braeside and Mannofield Community Council area during October. The report aims to highlight emerging issues in your area, and to provide crime prevention advice and guidance to Community Council members and the residents you represent. Our focus is to reduce crime and disorder, help create safer communities and respond effectively to local concerns.

Crime Overview
In Braeside and Mannofield there were a total of 102 calls to Police relating to the areas covered by the Whinhill and West End Community Policing Teams, These calls, in addition to proactive work, resulted in 76 individual charges being recorded. The vast majority of calls received by Police are concern calls, missing persons, assisting members of the public and false calls with good intentions.

Any significant incident
Crime Type                 October
Drug Offences                  0
Vandalism                         0
Assaults                            0
Thefts                               5
Road Traffic Offences     11

Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder

They have included an incident whereby unknown persons tried to force their way into a communal block by kicking at the door and youths acting in a threatening and abusive manner by shouting out at members of the community including threatening to expose their penis.

In response to these police have increased high visibility mobile patrols and provided suitable advice to homeowners in the area about being vigilant and keeping property secured at all times including when occupied. Police have also increased patrols within the area to deter further incidents.

Acquisitive Crime
They have included three incidents of theft by shoplifting from a local shop. There was also an incident whereby a male left his phone in a taxi and after advising they would return the device, took it to a block of flats and has not returned it. In response to these police have attended at all incidents and provided suitable safety advice including “Find my phone” software and the benefits of home security systems.

Suitable advice has also been passed regarding private home security systems and alarms as well as securing of property whilst you are home.

Road Safety & Road Crime
These have included three incidents where the driver of a vehicle was found to be using their mobile phone whilst in control of thew motor vehicle. There has also been an incident whereby an individual has been involved in a road traffic collision and has left the scene without reporting the accident to Police.

In response to these police have spoken with the involved parties and charged as required. Police have also increased their high visibility mobile patrols in the affected areas to increase their presence to deter the same kind of incidents reoccurring.

Community Safety – After Dark
Housebreaking can be a traumatic experience.

Although housebreaking can occur at any time of year criminals will often take advantage of darker nights and shorter daylight hours. Simple crime prevention measures can greatly reduce the chances of your home being targeted.

Lock the Door
Obvious, isn’t it? But some people don’t do it. Lock the door even if you’re only out for a short time. If you have window locks, lock those too. Keep the door locked when you are at home. This stops criminals coming in if you are in another part of the house or garden.
Don’t leave your keys on the inside of locks or just inside the door. If you have a spare key, don’t leave it under a mat, plant-pot or other easy to spot place at home. Never keep house keys and car keys on the same ring.

Safes and Security Boxes
Don’t keep large amounts of gold, jewellery, and cash at home. Bedrooms and lofts are routinely searched during housebreakings, particularly if the occupants are celebrating a cultural festival.

Consider storing valuable items at your bank. Private companies offer similar services. If this option is unavailable, consider an insurance rated safe. Safes should be securely attached to the solid fabric of the building not just to a plasterboard wall or left sitting on the floor.

Lighting and CCTV
House alarms and CCTV are a great visual deterrent. Modern Wi-Fi enabled CCTV systems can be combined with bright LED lighting. Any movement detected outside your home can trigger an alert to several mobile devices. If considering CCTV look to cover every aspect of your home. Small discreet cameras can also be used inside. Use signage to advise that CCTV is in use.

When your away use timers to turn on lights, radios, or TVs to put off unwanted visitors. Smart plugs allow times to be changed even whilst away.

Vehicles
High value cars are particularly vulnerable to theft and criminals will commit a housebreaking to obtain the true key of the vehicle. Where possible park vehicles inside a garage. Secure the keys inside your property out of sight. Avoid leaving them in obvious locations such as the hallway table or kitchen. Never leave valuables in your car.

Keyless Theft or Relay Theft involves criminals using handheld technology to identify whether a parked car has keyless entry. If the car ‘key’ is close enough the criminals can amplify the signal and send it to a transmitter which acts as the true key and opens the car allowing it to be driven off. Keep keys and fobs well away from doors and windows and purchase a signal blocker wallet to keep them in.

Property Marking and Insurance

There are several products you can buy which contain a unique code like DNA. This code is registered to your address. They are usually clear liquids which can be applied onto your possessions.

Check you have adequate insurance cover. Photograph and record your valuables to assist any insurance claim or Police report. This will assist police in identifying any items recovered.

General Maintenance
Never leave anything that can be used by a thief to gain entry lying around the garden. Overgrown bushes prevent neighbours seeing into your garden and allow criminals to go unseen.

Social Media
Consider what you are putting on social media, especially if you are going on holiday or attending weddings, functions or posting pictures with jewellery. Criminals search for this information to create a list of empty houses. Your social media accounts should be set to friends only.

Unusual Activity
Report any unusual activity to Police. Criminals will often call offering to carry out work. This can be used as a method to identify vulnerable targets.

Community Concerns
Please take the opportunity to let us know what concerns or community issues the representatives of the community council have discussed this month and would like the Local Policing Team and the Community Action Team to address to improve your area.

Tall Ships are Coming to Town

The Tall Ships Races are coming to Aberdeen next summer and there are amazing opportunities to get involved.

Local residents are being urged to get ready, get excited and get involved as the event returns to the city for the first time in nearly 30 years on 19-22 July 2025.

Applications are open for both volunteers and sail trainees to be part of Aberdeen’s biggest event for a generation.

It is Europe’s largest free family event and is expected to draw 50 Tall Ships from across the globe as well as attract 400,000 visits to the city.

Young people between 15 and 25 years old living in an AB postcode can apply to be part of a Tall Ship crew, and anyone over 16 can sign up to take up a range of volunteer roles during the event.

Adventure of a lifetime
The world-renowned, sailing extravaganza is offering the adventure of a lifetime for young local people to be recruited as sail trainees. They will get the chance to sail aboard a Tall Ship from Dunkirk, France to Aberdeen, or from Aberdeen to Kristiansand, Norway.

No prior sailing experience is required and the opportunity is designed to be inclusive, diverse and accessible. There are at least 100 funded places available, as well as the option of self-funding.

Call for volunteers
Volunteers are essential to delivering a successful festival and giving the international crews a warm Aberdeen welcome.

The city’s harbour will transform from an energy hub into a world-class event space which will offer a whole range of opportunities from ship liaison officers to transport co-ordinators and visitor experience hosts.

Applications are open to people aged 16 or older by 1 July 2025 who are available for a minimum of three shifts between 19 and 22 July.

A programme of public engagement is planned around the city and shire to let people know about The Tall Ships Races Aberdeen 2025 and encourage them to apply to be part of it.

Applications close for both volunteers and trainees at the end of January 2025, after which the selection and training process will begin.

To find out more – and get applying – head over to The Tall Ships Races Aberdeen website at https://bit.ly/TSRA25

Police Report - October 2024

The following report has been received from the Community Policing Team:

"This report covers progress we have made in dealing with your priorities for the Braeside and Mannofield Community Council area for the previous month The report aims to highlight emerging issues in your area, and to provide crime prevention advice and guidance.  Our focus is to reduce crime and disorder, help create safer communities and respond effectively to local concerns.

Community Policing Priorities

Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
On the 28th of September, Police were called to an address on South Anderson Drive regarding a male causing a disturbance within a private address, officers attended, and the male was arrested and conveyed away from the property. It was an isolated incident with no involvement to the wider community.
On the evening of the 29th of September, a resident of Hutchison Terrace reported that on reviewing his ring doorbell he saw a male attempt to open the front door to his property. The youth was unsuccessful and ran off in the direction of Great Western Road. As there was a time delay in reporting of over 24 hours and there were no other reports of similar incidents in the area, officers attended and seized the footage, which was circulated to officers across the city to gain an identification.

Acquisitive Crime:
On the 29th of September a retail store in Countesswells Road area reported 2 thefts within quick succession, one of the shoplifters was known to staff, which allowed officers to quickly trace and charge the male. The female remains outstanding.
On the 4th of October a retail store on Great Western Road reported that a male in his 50’s had entered the store and walked out with a bottle of vodka. Officers attended and circulated the CCTV image, but the male is yet to be identified.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
On the 4th of October a dog was hit by a car on Countesswells Road. The car driver contacted Police as striking a dog is a reportable road collision. Details were exchanged by the owners and incident closed off.

On the 12th of October 2 vehicles were involved in a collision at the junction of Anderson Drive and Seafield Road. Whilst the criteria for non-attendance was initially met however as there were 2 vehicles causing an obstruction and the parties were refusing to exchange detail, officers had to attend and  encourage their cooperation in the process and movement of the vehicles.

Community Engagement & Reassurance
On a happier note, on the 29th of September, Police attended a report of a found dog on Lousiville Avenue, before officers could attend and take possession of the dog, the owner called and to report their dog had escaped, the details were passed of where their dog was, and they went to collect it without Police involvement.

Winter Salt Bags

Residents across Aberdeen can now apply for a free one-tonne community salt bag to treat icy roads and pavements in their neighbourhood during the winter months.

The applications have been opened earlier than normal this year and, although it has been an unusually warm September, winter is fast coming and the deadline for applying for the one-tonne community salt bags is 31 October, 2024, after which applications will not be processed.

The scheme is designed to help communities help themselves when winter starts and in addition, there will again be big community salt bins in strategic locations around the city.

Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Councillor Ian Yuill said: “The weather has just turned autumnal and winter will be here before we know it.

“As always, the Council’s gritting teams will be working hard to treat roads and pavements, often under challenging conditions. On icy days, almost half of Aberdeen’s roads and the city’s busiest pavements on Union Street are treated before 7.30am.

“Unfortunately though, Council staff can't be everywhere all the time. There are 620 miles of roads in Aberdeen, slightly more than the distance from the city to Paris, and 1,242 miles of pavements, the distance from here to Rome. That’s why the one tonne community salt bag scheme and yellow salt bins are so important – they help local communities to help themselves.”

The one-tonne community salt bags, like the salt provided in grit bins, will be for use only on public areas.

A secure and accessible area, like a driveway, would have to be available for storing the one-tonne community salt bags.

Any residents or groups which would like a one-tonne bag should apply via One-tonne salt bags | Aberdeen City Council before 31 October. The community salt bags are delivered free of charge and are removed at the end of winter.

The locations for the big community salt bins are Bridge of Don (Laurel Drive), Garthdee (Asda car park – next to recycling facilities), Torry (Girdleness Road), Union Row, Crown Terrace (next to bins), Justice Street (next to recycling bins), Seaton Drive (car park on entry to Seaton Walk), Regent Court (car park), Northfield (Byron Square), Hilton (at the top of Anderson Road, next to Stewart Park), Rosemount (Leadside Road), Kingswells Park & Ride (next to recycling point and bins), Craibstone Park & Ride (west car park), Bridge of Don Park & Ride (next to recycling point and bins), Countesswells Road, Dyce (Asda car park-next to recycling facilities), Fernhill Drive (near Fernhill Road), Johnston Gardens North (at turning area), Tillydrone (Pennan Road beside the library).

More information about gritting routes and winter maintenance from Aberdeen City Council is available from www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/winter

Police Report - September 2024

The Local Policing Unit have forwarded the following report for September.

Community Policing Priorities
Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
On the 27th of August, Police were called to a male causing a disturbance in the street, close to the shopping precinct on Great Western Road. On Police attendance it was established that there wasn’t a crime, and the male was given the appropriate medical support.

On the 18th of September several police units attended an anonymous report of a male kicking a door at Craigielea Avenue, on arrival the male had left but was traced a short distance away. He was given suitable advice and details noted, pending any complaint.

Acquisitive Crime:
On the 25th of August, a resident reported that his Facebook accounts had been hacked, his personal one had requests sent to friends, which is a common way of spreading the hack. The male’s business Facebook account was obviously linked and compromised. Whilst it was recorded as no crime, due to no financial loss, and his enquiries were directed to Facebook and Meta.

On the 31st of August and 1st of September, a retail store on Countesswells Road reported the theft of £130 worth of stock, the staff followed the couple out the store and reported the registration of the car they got into. Enquiries were carried out and the male and female traced and arrested for the thefts.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
On the 31st of August, a resident reported motorbikes racing on Anderson Drive and a similar report on 3rd of September, there has been a increase in patrols carried out by Roads policing Units in the area, to deter and detect the use of illegal offroad motorbikes, however given the inherent risks in these pursuits they can only be carried out by specialist trained officers. One was stopped on 8th of September and seized with the rider being charged with various offences. Roads Policing Units have also issued 12 fixed penalty tickets over the last month in the area.

On the 19th of September, Police attended a 2-vehicle collision at Seafield Road and Anderson Drive, whilst there was no serious injury the junction was blocked, and it was the start of rush hour. Once the circumstances were established one of the drivers were given a fixed penalty notice for Careless Driving.

Police Report - August 2024

The following has been received from our Local Policing Unit regarding activities in the Braeside and Mannofield area this month:

Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
In July there was a report of cars parking up in Viewfield Road, the resident believed that the persons within were smoking Drugs. Officers attended and no vehicles were traced, and regular patrols have been carried out to discourage any further incidents.

Acquisitive Crime:
At the end of July, a report came in regarding an attempted Housebreaking at Cranford Road. The resident noticed on her doorbell camera, what she believed to be a youth trying the doorhandle in the early hours of the morning. The footage did not capture any images of the face and as such the resident didn’t want Police to attend, the same night there was an insecure car entered into on Craigton Road, a purse with Credit cards was taken, however the cards were cancelled before they could be used.

At the start of August, a resident of Countesswells Crescent received notification that there were suspicious transactions on her Amex credit card. On checking there were several transactions with Wizzair for flights. The resident contacted the card provider who cancelled the transactions and are carrying out their own internal investigation. This highlights the importance of regular checks on credit and debit card accounts and not waiting till the end of the month.
On the 6th of August, Staff at the Coop on Great Western Road reported a male for shoplifting, who they know to be previous incidents. Officers attended and identified the male, attempts to trace him were unsuccessful and a report was submitted to the Procurator Fiscal for an Apprehension Warrant to be issued.

On the night of the 7th of August there were reports of insecure vehicles being entered and reports of a suspicious male on Morningside Crescent and Deeside Gardens, unfortunately these were all reported retrospectively in the morning, when residents were checking their doorbell activations.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
On the 1st of August, Police attended a collision between a car and a cyclist. Thankfully the cyclist was uninjured. The driver was shaken by the incident but was not charged with any offences.
On the 19th of July Police attended at Craigton Road after a report of a 2 car collision, with 1 passenger trapped. On arrival Police arrival, it was quickly established that the circumstances were not as serious as initially reported. Officers stayed to assist with traffic management.
