Police Report - February 2020

This is the latest report from our local policing unit and covers the period 1st to 29th February 2020

Community Policing PrioritiesAntisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
There was damage to a number of windows at the former Braeside Primary School building during the period and enquiries are ongoing regarding this.

Acquisitive Crime:
There was no acquisitive crime reported during the period.
Following several instances of theft from commercial premises in the area, a male was arrested and charged in connection with these. This was also linked to the previously referred to theft of a charity tin from Mannofield Church.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
There were no incidents of note during the period in relation to this. We continue to work with partners in response to specific complaints in terms of road traffic offences and to make use of antisocial behaviour legislation.  Residents in the areas affected by antisocial driving are encouraged to contact Police on 101 at the time to report incidents in order for us to take positive action.

Community Engagement & Reassurance
This month I’d like to highlight some basic steps you can take to keep yourself safe from identity theft and scams.

All kinds of personal information can be of use to criminals including your name, address, national insurance number, credit card number or any other financial account information.

There are a number of simple things you can do to protect yourself from identity
theft:

 Take a few moments to check through transactions on your bank statements
 If you're not happy and spot anything unusual or suspicious contact the bank directly to establish fraud at an early stage. If you are expecting correspondence from your bank and it doesn't arrive contact the bank immediately to inform them of your concerns
> If you move house, tell your bank and Credit Card Company immediately
> Royal Mail offers a redirection service to help prevent identity fraud when you move house
> Regularly get a copy of your personal credit file from a credit reference agency
> Cancel any lost or stolen cards
> If your passport or driving licence has been lost or stolen contact the organisation that issued it
> Don't use the same password for more than one account and never use banking passwords on other websites. Avoid using your mother's maiden name or dates of birth as passwords
> NEVER give bank details to anyone unless you know and trust them and even then be cautious

When using a cash machine, please bear the following in mind:

+ Memorise your PIN, never write it down and shield the keypad when entering it
+ If you spot any camera or suspicious device attached to a cash machine - DO NOT USE IT. Contact the bank as soon as you are able, preferably at the time
+ Immediately report a card which has been confiscated by a cash machine and, if you can, don’t leave the machine – use your mobile to call the bank immediately
+ Never rely on a stranger to help retrieve a confiscated card or assist you at a cash machine

Fraudsters may also make contact with you by phone. The caller might pretend to be from your bank and ask for personal information such as bank details or they might be someone offering you a deal or a prize.

> Consider making your phone number ex-directory or obtaining a landline handset that requires the caller to identify themselves prior to you answering
> Don’t give out any personal information unless you are the one who made the call and you are certain of the identity of the person you are speaking to
> Don’t give out your credit card or bank card details to strangers on the telephone
> NEVER tell somebody your bank PIN number, even if they claim to be the bank or Police. If the caller is genuine they will never ask for this information
> Don’t give out information which may infer that you live alone, are older or vulnerable
> Never send money to anyone who claims to have a prize for you - if it sounds too good to be true, I’m afraid it probably is!
> Contact local trading standards – they may be able to use approved ‘call blocking’ technology

Also available are the three following contact email addresses for the West End:

AiryhallBroomhillGarthdeeCPT@Scotland.pnn.police.uk

HazleheadAshleyQueensCrossCPT@Scotland.pnn.police.uk
TorryFerryhillCPT@scotland.pnn.police.uk

The primary purpose of these e-mail addresses is for residents to report non-criminal queries, such as passing attentions, information, advice and non-criminal quality of life issues, such as youth annoyance. These e-mail addresses are not for reporting crimes or offences. The process for reporting any crimes or offences is to call 101, where our Service Centre will log the call on our Command and Control system and allocate the incident to our area. Using this process negates the possibility of the report being missed and also ensures that the caller’s details, addresses and telephone numbers are noted for our awareness and response.

Should you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to discuss these with the Officer attending your Community Council Meeting or by emailing the above e-mail addresses or our Service Centre. It is not necessary to wait until the meeting and your local CPT Inspector, PI Sim welcomes your contact.
