Telephone Box Removal
BT are proposing to remove 31 public payphones from Aberdeen. Two of these payphones are within the Community Council area.
Earmarked for removal are the telephone boxes in Countesswells Road at the junction with Springfield Road where only 1 call has been made in the past 12 months. The other is the payphone near Boots the Chemist at the Mannofield shops in Great Western Road where 241 calls have been recorded in the past year.
The Community Council have written to the Council objecting to the removal of the Great Western Road pay phone on the following counts:
(a) Given the older
demographic of the area, not all residents have access to a mobile phone while
out and about. The telephone box at this
location serves an important community service.
(b) This particular
phone box is located at a shopping area and not a residential road. The increased footfall in the area raises the
risk of the need to use the facility in the case of an emergency.
(c) This phone box is on a main arterial route and is a point
of access for motorists travelling through the area.
