Police Report - May 2024

The following report has been circulated by our local policing unit.

"This report covers progress we have made in dealing with your priorities for the Braeside & Mannofield Community Council over the last month.

The report aims to highlight emerging issues in your area, and to provide crime prevention advice and guidance to Community Council members and residents you represent. Our focus is to reduce crime and disorder, help create safer communities and respond effectively to local concerns.

Community Policing Priorities
Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
On the 27th a resident of Norfolk Road called and reported bogus workmen, where 2 males attended at the address of a elderly resident and asked if she knew of any Polish or Ukrainian families in the area, as they were reaching out to the local residents associations to see if any resident of that decent were requiring support. When the resident said she didn’t know of anyone, the males then asked if she had any work she required doing around the house, whilst they were there. The resident rightly rejected and closed the door. Unfortunately, it was several hours after they attended before police were notified, so they had left the area prior to our attendance.

On the 8th of May several residents reported a disturbance outside Mannofiled Church, involving 2 males and a female. Residents reported that the female was being assaulted by the males. Several Police Units immediately attended, and all parties were traced, and the circumstances established. All individuals knew each other, and this was an isolated incident between them, so there was no risk to the wider community. It resulted in 1 male being arrested for the assault on the female and the other being arrested as he was wanted on an apprehension warrant. The female refused to provide a statement incriminating the males.

Acquisitive Crime:
On the 20th of April, the Co-op reported that a male and female had entered the store and attempted to steal a quantity of alcohol, staff challenged them and prevented them from leaving the store until they returned the items. The incident was captured on CCTV and officers identified the male as being linked to other thefts. He was reported for the theft and for threatening the staff, under the Retails Workers Act, as part of a larger case when traced a few days later.

A resident of Deeside Park reported a fraud on 25th of April, having booked a paid for accommodation on his credit card for an upcoming holiday, he received a reminder regarding the payment. When he checked, the transaction had gone to different company name, similar to the genuine one. This highlights a common internet scam, where email addressed or websites are cloned, and have small changes to the email addresses to trick members of the public. A common link going around is a variation of Microsoft, where their URL address will be Micosoft or Microsft... all slight variations to take you to another website where your details can be compromised.

The Co-op on Countesswells Road reported 2 thefts one of £30 of food on the 27th of April, by a male that staff identified by name, and one by a female on the 28th of £50 worth of alcohol. The male was charged as part of a larger case. The female is still unidentified.

A resident of Airyhall Avenue reported on the 1st of May that her son’s bike and scooter had been stolen from Airyhall Primary School over 2 consecutive weekends. On both occasions they had been left after school on the Friday, and on both occasions, they were not locked. I would encourage all residents to secure their property and not give opportunistic thieves the easy access to items.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
An incident of Road rage was reported to police on the 23rd of April where the driver of a blue BMW got into a heated debate with a pedestrian on Seafield Road. Both parties gave varying descriptions of the incident but as there were no independent witnesses suitable advice was given to both parties and no crime was recorded.

A stolen motorbike was recovered in the carpark at the rear of Aberdeen Squash Club on Cranford Road in the early hours of the 28th April, it had been stolen several days earlier in Aberdeen City Centre

Community Engagement & Reassurance
Complaints regarding speeding and driver behaviour continue to be a common occurrence, 2 Westend and Hazlehead officers were out on 21 May carrying out speed detection around schools, primarily Airyhall Primary a small number of drivers were spoken to regarding their speed and a media post was also circulated to highlight the issue.

Roads Policing Units have also assisted in the area, on the 4th and 5th of May, 2 driverswere charged with Careless Driving on Anderson Drive, and issued with Anti-Social Behaviour Warning.
